Ottawa – September 25, 2024 – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced today that Nolan McAuley, a broomball athlete, received a two-year sanction for an anti-doping rule violation. The athlete’s urine sample, collected in competition on March 29, 2024, revealed the presence of cannabis, a prohibited substance.
The presence of cannabis, classified as both a specified substance and a substance of abuse on the Prohibited List, is considered an adverse analytical finding when the urinary concentration exceeds 150 ng/mL. In accordance with the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP), when a case involves a substance of abuse, the standard two-year sanction may be reduced to three months, and further to one month, when the athlete can demonstrate that the substance was used out of competition and unrelated to sport performance, and they complete a CCES-approved treatment program.
In this instance, as the athlete failed to dispute the anti-doping rule violation or provide an explanation within the timelines specified in the CADP, the violation was confirmed and a standard two-year sanction, which ends on September 5, 2026, was imposed by way of a deemed waiver.
During the sanction period, the athlete is ineligible to participate in any capacity with any sport signatory to the CADP or the World Anti-Doping Code, including training with teammates.
