(Ottawa, Ontario – July 19, 2018) – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) has partnered with McLaren Global Sport Solutions Inc. (MGSS), an international leader in sport and ethics, to present the 2019 Symposium on Match Manipulation and Gambling in Sport - the first Canadian symposium to address these issues. The event will take place April 24-25, 2019 at The Globe and Mail Centre in Toronto. Registration information will be available in September 2018.
“The CCES is excited to partner with MGSS for this first ethics symposium, which will highlight the threat posed by match manipulation and gambling in sport and consider a strategic approach to protect the integrity of sport in Canada,” says Paul Melia, CCES President and CEO.
A panel of international experts led by Richard McLaren, O.C., CEO of MGSS, will introduce delegates to the threat of match manipulation; present sophisticated responses to this issue that have been developed internationally; and offer a proposed Canadian model designed to protect our sport system. “Match fixing is a significant global issue tied to betting on sports of every kind. We look forward to gathering international experts in Toronto to address this growing threat to the integrity of sport,” adds McLaren.
Declan Hill, investigative journalist, academic, and international expert on match manipulation in sport, will offer his expertise and moderate conference sessions. Hill was recently appointed to the position of Professor of Investigations at the University of New Haven.
The CCES is also pleased to share plans for a series of annual ethics symposia to address other ethical issues that threaten Canadian sport. The symposia will bring together members of the Canadian and international sport community to examine ethical issues and identify proactive strategies to protect the integrity of sport.
“An annual symposium is a collaborative approach to facilitating national and international conversations on key issues related to ethics in sport,” says Melia. “The CCES is eager to work with the sport community to develop effective and sustainable approaches that will ensure sport in Canada is fair, safe and open.”
Plans for future symposia will be announced at the 2019 symposium.
